More than ever, in these troubled times, we need to discern a new horizon and especially need each other.Pope Francis reminds us of this in his encyclical letter Fratelli tutti: “No one saves himself alone”. And he adds that one cannot fully find one’s identity without an openness “to the universal, without allowing oneself to be challenged by what is happening elsewhere, without allowing oneself to be enriched by other cultures or without showing solidarity with the tragedies of other peoples (§32 and §146).
When we hear about the sufferings of the world, we see the increase in precariousness in large parts of our world. Solidarity and social friendship, which we can all experience, are just as indispensable as courageous and necessary political decisions. Again and again, we are called to serve one another. Solidarity opens up a new horizon for us. May this Christmas 2021 make us attentive to the signs of hope on our earth, in our society, in our suffering Church, in our Cor Unum Family and in the SVECJ.
This horizon unveiled by the birth of Jesus is the Light that enters our lives. It is a light that drives away the darkness of fear, that makes a source spring up, that makes the joy of sharing and praise burst forth. In this new year of 2022, let us deepen our view of the world, of the source of our faith, and may the strength and boldness of the Gospel give us the confidence we all need! Come, Lord! With you, life takes a new path that gives the world the breath of Life and Hope.
