At the celebration of the Nativity, we are presented, in a manger, with a newborn baby. A human in place of food; a curious thing. Later, Jesus himself would say: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats of this bread will live forever” (Jn 6:51). The sign of the manger finds its explanation.
Jesus becomes food for us
God becomes food for men. And, to crown the scandal, it is to the shepherds, to these marginalized, miserable, outcast people, to those whose lives are punctuated by the movements of their cattle, to those who live in the darkness of the pastures, to those who have forgotten the way to the temple, that the good news is announced: “to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour who is Christ the Lord” (Lk 2:11)
God with us
Brothers and sisters of the Evangelical Life Society of the Heart of Jesus, God comes to us in our darkness, in our difficulties, in our miseries. He invites us to be filled with his presence, to quench our thirst for the life that springs from the Word made flesh. But he invites us, also and above all, to announce hope and joy to the marginalized, the wretched, the forgotten who populate the peripheries.
With Jesus, becoming light
Let us become bearers of light in the darkness of all those, through our prayerful and active closeness. Our commitment to the service of a humanity in crisis is the pledge of our walk closer to Christ. Let us not forget the countries at war (Ukraine, Russia, DRC…), the countries and regions shaken by violence of all kinds (Latin America, Africa, the Near and Middle East…); let us not forget the citizens of the world, victims, at whatever level, of the multiple deprivations imposed by wars, terrorism, natural disasters, environmental degradation…

Eyes fixed on Christ
As we enter the year of grace 2023, let us fix our eyes on Christ, He who is justice, peace and joy. Let us make the miseries of our brothers and sisters our own, so that where there is despair, we may put hope, and where there is darkness, we may put light.
